Coach’s Tips & Comments

Coach Ruby-

Greetings from the Starfish Group. What a fantastic year we had - coming in second in Daytona Beach, winning at the Sunshine State games, and placing third in the JO’s! Contributing to the team efforts was Susan Smiddy who ended the season with four Top 16 National Age Group Reportable times and swam away with the High Point Trophy in Gainesville.

Also helping out in the summer were Kevin Hayes and Franciso Lacayo who made the Zone All Star team and attended the meet in Texas. Other swimmers having great times were: Michelle Pava, Carlos Araque, Jorge Prieto-Puga, Alex Fairest, Andrea Garzon and Rebecca Smiddy. Many thanks to those who rounded out the relays: Denisse Olarte, Alejandra Prieto-Puga, Brittany Singletary and Jennifer Velasco.

We are hoping for a great start this year!

Please note: If you wish to swim in another group you must notify the coach ahead of time.

Message from MAC Foundation President: I hope you all had a nice holiday, and that everyone is getting in great shape after a good, intense holiday training time. I want to let you know about the activities of the Foundation. As many of you know, our dues only basically pay for the expenses of the pool time and the coach’s salaries. Whenever we want to have improvements in our pool equipment, travel, or other things we need additional funding. In this way we have been able to support many activities recently and over the years. We will be getting some new lane lines soon, we will probably get a large sun shade for the picnic area, we subsidized the Christmas party and travel trips, and have helped with expenses involved in Nationals trips (so everyone can hear about MMAC!). In addition we have secured promises that we will be getting a new set of electronic timing pads so we can continue to host high quality meets. Our best source of fund raising is in hosting meets. However, this requires a great deal of labor from many people. We need to get more people involved so that the few shouldering much of the work load don’t get burned out! Therefore, your Board has decided that we will be offering FREE MAC Foundation memberships, that will entitle you to reduced rates at travel, parties, and other activities. The only requirement to be a member is to provide Odalys Hayes with documentation of 10 hours of service to the teams. This could be working concessions in afternoons or at meets (see Mrs. Araque if this is how you would like to serve), or timing at a meet. Other areas of service will come up from time to time also. Once Odalys has your record of service she will record you as a member in good standing. Most pressing is the upcoming “ABC” Meet the weekend of January 28th. We hope to raise enough money to purchase more lane lines.

As you can see, we are trying to institute a newsletter to keep parents and swimmers informed about upcoming events. Please give us your feedback on what you think the Board should or could do to make the team even better! Also, visit the team webpage at https://mac-web.tripod.com/MACM/ Matthew Smiddy is the webmaster. Please email or tell him your suggestions. Best wishes for a great holiday and New Year.

Bill Smiddy
